Sharon M.From Midlothian, VirginiaI've been a handful of timesWelcome to a home-away-from home!I have stayed in a number of Italian villas over the past few years and this was by far the very best! The grounds are lovely with a pool and a well-appointed outdoor area for lounging, eating, etc. The bedrooms have plenty of storage and room to spread out. And the bed linens are of the highest quality ( lovingly ironed by Maria Pia) and the bathrooms are more than adequate. ( Just be sure to bring your own bath soap. The slivers of soap that are provided are just not adequate, but I've never seen anything better in any other Italian villa or hotel.) There is great attention to detail in this villa, from the beautiful Deruta pottery and dishware to the locally made table linens. Would recommend whether you want to stay put and relax or explore all of the near-by Umbrian towns.
Marylyn M.From Baltimore, MarylandThis is my first tripWe couldn't have picked a better place for our first trip to Italy.Myself and 15 other family members have just returned from a fabulous vacation at La Fattoria Del Gelso. It was an ideal family trip in a most beautiful section of Umbria, Cannara. Wendy, Marco and Teresa made us feel right at home and we highly recommend at least one night of Teresa's superb Italian cooking. The location of La Fattoria is excellent for day trips to the many fascinating towns surrounding it. We especially enjoyed Deruta and Assisi. Some of us even travelled to Florence only a two hour drive. Truffle Hunting was a unique and fun experience for everyone. We can't say enough good things about our stay. La Fattoria was immaculate and inviting with plenty of room for all of us. We couldn't have picked a better place for our first trip to Italy.
Laura and Mike FitzpatrickFrom Bethesda, MDI'm practically a nativeUmbrianWe could write a book about experiencing Umbria with Suzy and Bill Menard. We did the October Food and Wine tours in October 2013 and 2014. We toured ancient hills towns (Assisi, Orvieto, Perugia, Bevagna, Montefalco, Norcia, Spoleto, and more). We hunted for truffles in the forest, tasted "pressed before our eyes" olive oil, and visited small local wineries producing Sageantino wines. We took cooking classes with Ernesto of Perbacco in Cannara, made chocolate at the Perugina headquarters, learned how proscuitto is made, watched the weaving of Umbria linens at the Pardi family factory, painted ceramic plates at Geribi in Deruta. And went shopping for porcini, lentils, and beautiful scarves. But perhaps the most enjoyable part of our visits was relaxing by the fire in the evenings and dining (for hours) on the fabulous multi-course Umbrian meals cooked by Bill and Suzy's friends and local chefs.
Deborah WorthingtonFrom Middletown, NJI've been a handful of timesFabulous! What a wonderful way to see Italy. Every tour or trip was an intimate experience. It felt like we were meeting friends not vendors. Particularly loved truffle hunting and cooking with truffles. Can't wait to go back for another visit!
Dorrie Argentine GleasonFrom Kensington, MDI've been a handful of timesTime at La Fattoria del Gelso with Bill and Suzy is one excellent adventure! It's hard to say what is the 'best' part of a week at La Fattoria del Gelso with Bill and Suzy. The villa itself is inviting, comfortable, and beautifully filled with locally made linens and pottery that speak of tours to come. The food is plentiful and delicious whether being made by MariaPia or by some of the many chefs visiting at the villa or at their own restaurants. Often you get a chance to be in the cucina working alongside the chefs - a treat for any foodie. The towns visited and the countryside are breathtaking. Wendy and Marco keep everything running smoothly. But really the best part of the week is the friendships made in an easy, relaxed and oh-so-fun time! Although not knowing anyone in the group except Bill and Suzy, I left with new friends both from the home and Italy. Umbria may be the green heart of Italy but Bill and Suzy are the heart of an excellent adventure there.
Millie GobbleFrom San Juan Capistrano, Ca.I've been a handful of timesThis was the most unique experience!I've traveled many times. This was the most unique experience. It was better than my expectations. Bill and Suzy were wonderful. It was like visiting old friends who really wanted us to have a wonderful time. And we did!
Dawn ColeFrom Copiague, NYThis is my first tripFabulous in every way! This had to be the BEST trip I have ever taken! The Villa was wonderful, Marco was extremely helpful and very personable. Each side trip was better than the one before. I would take this trip over and over if I could and look forward to planning my next trip!
