Discover the Cuisine of Naples at Via Umbria
Washington, D.C. – This week, Via Umbria is exploring Neapolitan cuisine with a series of dinners and events dedicated to showcasing the rich flavors of this historical coastal region.
Via Umbria kicks off the series with a class on The Foods of Naples starring Gnocchi alla Sorrentina on Thursday, July 7, at 7:00pm. This crowd-pleasing dish comes from Sorrento, near Naples, and is a classic summer dish. Guests will learn the secrets to creating perfectly fluffy gnocchi from Executive Chef Johanna Hellrigl as they sit around kitchen island and join in the culinary conversation while they enjoy a set menu of Neapolitan favorites. This demonstration dinner is $75 and reservations are required.
On Friday July 8 at 6:00pm, visiting author Katherine Wilson will take guests on a journey to Naples with a reading of her book Only in Naples: Lessons in Food and Famiglia from my Italian Mother-in-Law. Wilson is an American actress, writer and voice artist who has lived and worked in Rome for the past seventeen years. After graduating Magna cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University, she moved to Italy to work in film, television and theater. Her book is a whimsical and warm-hearted account of love, family, and great Italian food. In addition to a reading, Wilson will share some favorite recipes and sign copies of her book, which are available for purchase at Via Umbria.
Also on July 8, Via Umbria is hosting a Neapolitan dinner starring traditional seafood dishes crafted by Executive Chef Johanna Hellrigl. As always, Friday night dinners are served CYOB (Choose Your Own Bottle) and guests are encouraged to arrive a little early to meet with Via Umbria’s wine staff in order to select the perfect glass or bottle of wine from the in-house wine cellar, which are sold at retail price, without the usual restaurant markup. Dinner service begins at 7:00pm and reservations are required.
The Amalfi Coast is well known for its picturesque scenery, but the culinary landscape is just as notable. On Saturday July 9 at 7:30pm, Via Umbria will bring the flavors of Amalfi to Washington DC. Guests will dine alla campagna (Campania-style) on decadent favorites from the region, including Suppli di Riso, Spaghetti alle Vongole, and Torta Caprese. Each seafood-inspired course will be paired with a wine that showcases the flavors of the dish. Reservations are required for this dinner.
